WhatsApp as a sales channel: what the retail numbers show (and what they do not)

Magalu’s Lu converts on WhatsApp about three times better than the company’s own app, per SBVC, StartSe, and CNN Brasil (2026). The number is real. The reading made of it is usually wrong.

Anyone who works the operation hears the raw version from the floor: “WhatsApp converts more than the app and we invest less there”. The sentence is right. The reason, almost everyone gets wrong.

What these numbers actually measure

The 3x compares two different audiences. On one side, those who open the app on impulse and browse. On the other, those who message with intent already formed. Part of the jump is selection, not persuasion.

Treating the number as “WhatsApp sells three times more” confuses the channel with the customer it attracts. The channel shines because it catches the customer at the moment of decision, not because the AI is better there.

The number behind the number

What the reports do not separate: WhatsApp converts on reorder and quick questions, not long research. Conversation is linear. Comparing eight products side by side is worse in a chat than in a grid.

Brazil has near-universal WhatsApp penetration, and that is the real advantage, not the conversation itself. The customer is already there, with the thread open, downloading nothing.

The operational distance

Between “WhatsApp converts more” and “assembling a sale on WhatsApp” there is a wide gap, and it is not about conversation. It is about integration: the assistant reading real stock, talking to payment and order. Without it, it promises what it does not have and burns trust on the first missed delivery.

It is the same lesson as Lu and Walmart’s Sparky: the sale lives in the wiring, not the text.

This quarter’s decision

The number does not change the year. It changes one budget decision: before building one more app feature the customer does not open, wire the channel they already use to a narrow job, reorder and availability.

Think about the channels report that circulated through your leadership and changed nothing. Almost all of them celebrate WhatsApp and never say where to start. That is the one worth translating.

Send me the report or the number pushing you toward WhatsApp. In one hour I will send back a one-page brief: three actions for this quarter, each tied to an indicator your operation already measures, like reorders per customer or time to a useful answer. If one becomes a project, the two-week Diagnóstico turns the action into scope, with criterion before code.
