What is an AI agent (and why it is not the same as a chatbot)

An AI agent is a system that carries out multi-step tasks, deciding on actions and using tools, not only answering text. It is not the same as a chatbot. The chatbot answers the question; the agent acts on it.

The difference is practical. Ask a chatbot “do you have this product”, and it answers from what it learned. Ask an agent, and it checks real stock, confirms, and can open the order. One talks. The other touches the operation.

How the operation measures it

The right metric for an agent is not messages answered. It is tasks completed without a human: the order closed, the exchange scheduled, the question resolved end to end. Resolution, not interaction.

Whoever measures an agent by conversation volume is measuring a chatbot and calling it an agent.

What the number hides

Here is what the word “agent” hides in the vendor demo. The agent’s value and risk are in the action it is allowed to take. An agent that can act wrong is worse than a chatbot that only talks.

Promising what is not in stock, canceling the right order, granting a discount that does not exist: the agent errs in the operation, not in the conversation. Klarna learned this the expensive way, when the agent delivered generic answers and the company began rehiring humans.

Why this changes an AI project

An agent in retail needs three things a chatbot does not: real integration with stock, order, and payment; clear limits on what it can and cannot do; and a criterion for when to hand off to a human.

Without that, “agent” is a marketing label on a chatbot, and the first wrong action burns trust. It is the same discipline as Magalu’s Lu on WhatsApp: the assistant only promises what the system confirms.

Think about the term your operation uses but defines from the vendor brochure. “AI agent” became that term in 2026. Everyone calls something an agent, and nobody defines what it is allowed to do.

Tell me yours, and which action you are considering letting the agent take. In one hour I will send back a one-page card: what is a chatbot and what is an agent in your case, the integration points needed, and where the action limit has to sit. If the card shows the project needs criterion before conversation, the two-week Diagnóstico is the next step.
